Slovak bass singer Martin Gurbal' graduated from the Vocal Department within the Košice Conservatory under the tutelage of Ľudmila Šomorjaiová. Since starting his musical career he has been awarded the second prize at the International Vocal Competition of Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský in Trnava (1994) and the second prize at the International Singing Competition of Lucia Popp in Bratislava (1999). In 1996 he celebrated his most remarkable success at the International Antonín Dvořák Vocal Competition in Karlovy Vary where he was the overall winner of the competition.

 

He was first engaged at the opera house of the Košice State Theatre but since 2001 he has been performing as a prominent soloist at the opera house of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre in Ostrava. In the same period he has been engaged on other opera stages; the National Theatre in Prague, the National Theatre Brno, the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, the Miškolc Opera House and the Chamber Opera House in Krakow.

 

At the moment his repertoire includes key roles from more than 25 operas. Among the most remarkable are bass roles as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo and Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte), Don Giovanni and Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Don Paquale and Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Banquo (Macbeth), Il Re and Ramfis (Aida), Sparafucile and Monterone (Rigoletto), Ferrando (Il Trovatore), Mefisto (Faust), Gremin (Eugene Onegin) and Bluebard (A Kékszakállú hercegvára). From his Czech repertoire it is worth mentioning the role of Kecal (The Bartered Bride), Mumlal (Two Widows), The Watersprite (Rusalka), Count Vilém (The Jacobin), Dikoi (Katya Kabanova) and The Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen).

 

Martin Gurbal' is much in demand, he appears with the Slovak State Philharmonic Košice, the Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina, the Janáček's Philharmonic Orchestra in Ostrava, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olomouc, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic in Zlín, the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonia and with among other orchestras. Besides the Czech Republic and Slovakia he is engaged often in Poland, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, Latvia and Malta.

 

His concert repertoire includes above all, pieces by Mozart, Haydn and Dvořák (Stabat mater, Te Deum and Requiem), Verdi (Requiem), Mascagni (Messa di Gloria) and Janáček (Glagolitic Mass). He also performs romantic songs from major composers.

For the role Don Giovanni he was nominated in 2007 for the Thálie Theatre Prize.
